Hi All

This has gone out from Skip already, but just wanted to post again with just a
bit more information!

You can now renew your YAMBA membership online.

http://www.yorkareamountainbikers.org/membership/membership.php

When you renew, please enter an email address that you monitor (not a junk one)
as membership materials will be emailed to the address you enter.

Also, you must complete the Paypal process for your membership to be considered
complete.

At some point I will be transitioning the renewal reminders to be via email and
not snail mail. In the mean time I will mostly likely switch the renewal
reminder to be a post card with no renewal forms mailed.

Thanks

who wants to ride both lake loops this week? i am going to go either wednesday
or thursday afternoon. probably try to get at the marina around 2 or 3. just
an intermediate pace. trying to enjoy some of the last fall weather that we
will be privileged to have this week. i also plan on hittin' the ridge
tommorrow around the same time. i really don't like riding the darkside alone, i
think it's haunted.

Good points.

I'll personally visit the YAMBA Facebook page before the new website because of
the ease of access through my mobile device. Just my 2 cents.

Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Kevin, for taking so much of your personal time to create the new

request: "Mountainbike" in the header of the new site should be "Mountain
Bike." Otherwise we're all members of YAMA.

Skip,
Great idea for the online membership. The club is doing a great job and I have
wanted to contribute $ for awhile but I never seem to find time to drop a check
in the mail.

I just tried to go on the website and signup for a membership but the form goes
blank after the page loads.

Thanks, Kevin

I agree on not wanting things to be complex, which is why mailing
lists are a good thing.

Some things from my own experience with YBR that may be useful as you
hone the forum, web site, and calendar:

1) I started with just a mailing list. This is when YBR was growing,
and it was an easy way for all members to 'post' and see what was
going on. But eventually we needed a way to organize things, as a
mailing list is not good at that, so...

2) I wrote the YBR event database. This worked out really well, and
gave us all kinds of granularity. I even had it set so that when
someone posted an event, others could 'join' that event, so we'd have
an idea of who was coming. I also had the ability to track race times
and training through the events.

3) What happened was that nobody used the event sign ups (because that
requires active site partition). Nobody used the training either.
Originally , I had 3 main mailing lists (cycling, running, and
multisport). People complained and wanted a single list, so I made it
that way again. Of course, years later, they again wanted a bunch of
different lists. Can't please anybody :-) The point, however, was
that while cool, many features weren't being used by anybody, so were
effectively useless.

So, without going into too much detail, we ended up with a simpler
database to track events, and a single team-wide mailing list. The
key was that it was user-driven, so always up to date. Every member
of the team had the ability to schedule events, and locations, along
with publishing any info about themselves they would like (phone,
email, goals, etc). Each member could also comment on other people's
event and location submissions, but not alter the original. This was
a good compromise between integrity, security, and availability. Of
course, you got the benefit of being able to search and list. Need a
list of mountain bikers? road bikers? Skiiers? it was 2 clicks to
do that, for example. Same for getting lists of places to mountain
bike, road bike, or ski.
The result was that we had a lot of good information in a consistent
format, and many people contributed vs. all of the effort falling on a
couple of people due to either access control for security or the site
simply being a pain to navigate for people who didn't use it often.

So, what I learned from managing a large and diverse team's data (keep
in mind, nice tools like phpbb and google calendar didn't exist when I
started all of this):

1) mailing lists, being passive, are your best communications device.
Don't get rid of them or try to replace them with web toys. It's best
to have at least one list that will go to all members (who want it, of
course ... always give the option to opt-out, or better yet, opt-in).
Mail is easy for end users to archive, search, etc. With web stuff,
you are forced to actively seek it out, and are stuck using whatever
UI you are given.

2) for an online database/forum/bulletin board/whatever to be
effective, it has to be user-driven, and the interface has to be honed
to be efficient for what it is trying to accomplish. In YBR's case,
that was a reliable calendar of events, people, and places to do
things, and the ability to intuitively filter on the information that
you wanted at any given time. The bonus here was that those
responsible for membership already had a real database to deal with it
in (I just added a 'renewal date' field, and only gave certain users
access to the membership screens).

Just some of the stuff I learned from doing this over the years. Keep
up the great work, it's looking good so far.
