Jumper courses are very demanding, calling for technical accuracy on the part of
the rider and absolute obedience from the horse. Connecting with the horse from
the hind legs, through the back to the bit will prevent most of resistance
problems that horses have with jumping. As the riders head toward the jump, they
focus on the rhythm of your horse's strides.
Elements of successful show jumping include riding lines, related distances,
bending lines, and jumping off of turns. Competitors in jumper classes are
judged on number of faults caused by knocking down or refusing to jump obstacles
and on speed. A typical jumper course is 8-12 fences consisting of natural as
well as brightly colored jumps. Most jumper classes consist of a first round (or
two rounds) followed by a jump-off among all riders with clear first rounds. A
jump-off course has fewer fences than the jumper class.
Penalty points are assessed if the horse refuses a jump, or brings down the
highest element of an obstacle. Additionally in the jumper ring penalty points
are added if the allowed time limit for the course is exceeded. Riders near the
end of the starting order have the advantage of seeing how the first riders
complete the course.
Classes are broken into a variety of sub-groupings. Amateur owner jumpers must
be ridden by amateur owners only. Adult amateur jumpers must be ridden by
amateur rider, but do not have to actually own the horse. While Junior jumpers
must be ridden by riders under the age of 18. Schooling jumpers may be ridden by
anyone.
In the jumper show ring, style does not count; jumper classes are purely
athletic tests of speed and strength. Competitors in jumper classes are judged
on number of faults caused by knocking down or refusing to jump obstacles and on
speed. In addition to the faster speed of jumper class competition, courses in
jumper classes are also composed of more varied obstacles.

In case you didn't know - the skinny 5'10" guy from the And1 streetball squad
called The Professor who is well known for his outstanding ball handling
actually can dunk! And right, he is white!
As many outstanding ball players Grayson Boucher aka The Professor has a fix
workout he sticks to.
"Everday I'm in the gym for a minimum of 2 hours. I've been getting up at 5am
everyday lately knocking my basketball workouts out early in the morning. Then I
run 2 miles and lift for about an hour. Too me, whatever you put into working on
your game is what you get out of it. Its all about your time investment and
dedication. When I go to the gym its not going to ever be some sweet ass
workout. You can't just go to the gym and shoot around casually and expect to
improve. I get up at least 500 everytime I'm in there and go hard with full
court dribbling drills, then end the workout with some free throws. When I run 2
miles I try and keep one hard pace the whole time. Right now I get in 2 miles at
1330, which is tough to get done every morning, but when you start seeing
results you begin to like it and go harder. I used to lift for bulk and got
heavy at one point and found that quickness is more important for me then bulk
weight. This year I'm concentrating on working my legs harder then I ever have
before, because my goal for this upcoming season is to dunk on the regular." -
The Professor
In case you ask yourself which exercises will make your legs stronger, here are
a couple:
Jump rope:
Almost every NBA player uses this "old" exercise. Jumping rope is a great way to
build stamina, and work on your leg strength. In addition, it builds jumping
ability (explosiveness, calf strength, etc.).
Wall sits and squats:
These exercises will help you build leg strength, which is a key component of
athletic fitness, and therefore jumping ability. Remember to only use a weight
that is comfortable for you, and to always have a trainer or training partner
work out with you.
But remember that vertical leap is part leg strength and part explosiveness. And
the explosiveness part is the more important of the two. Just like The Professor
said it, it's not about the size of your leg muscles, or how much weight you can
put up in the gym. It's about your athletic ability, coordination, and your
ability to explode up and off the ground.

To be the best athlete, you need to have a high vertical jump. To get a high
vertical jump, you have to exercise and do the RIGHT exercises. Here are 3 tips
to help you gain many inches on your vertical jump.
The first thing to remember is a simple formula that equals a very high leap.
The formula is this; Strength+Quickness=Explosion! Now with that in mind, you
must do a combination of exercises that build both your strength and quickness.
Most people only focus on squatting 500 pounds or sprint 40 yards in 4.3
seconds. That mind-set will only hold you back.
There are many workouts that will improve only quickness or only strength, but
if done properly, you can use each exercise to improve both aspects of jumping.
Jump Squats!
This is a perfect example of an exercise that develops both strength and
quickness. Start with a dumbbell in each hand and your feet shoulder width
apart. Bend your knees until your thighs are parallel to the ground, then
explode upward, jumping as high as you can. Immediately when you land, repeat
the whole process and continue that until you can no longer jump off the ground.
You will be very sore the first few times you do this, but if you do it twice a
week, for 3 weeks, you can improve your vertical jump by 8 inches or more!
Sit Ups
Most people think that abs have nothing to do with jumping power. That is WRONG!
You must develop a strong, well balanced core before you can really see the
results of your jump training. Do at least 100 sit ups every day.
