Saturday December 2, 2006, senior members of the United States Sport Jujitsu Association {USSJA} met to discuss future plans for the organization. At this meeting a new President was voted in.
Ernie Boggs (WV) nominated Eric Latza of Mt. Airy, NC. - John Delvecchio (NY) seconded the motion and Mr. Latza was unanimously voted in.
Eric Latza is one of the original Sport Jujitsu pioneers participating in the trials and tribulations which helped it become a viable sport as well as contributed immensely to the growth. He is a two-time sport jujitsu world champion, a martial arts Hall of Fame member, an exceptional martial arts instructor, a loving father and very good friend.
We could not have chosen anyone more qualified to take the helm and lead us forward; he is truly a leader among leaders. For more information on Mr. Latza visit his web site at: http://www.ericlatza.com/
Congratulations Shihan Latza as I look forward to assisting you in reestablishing the USSJA Sport Jujitsu program as the premiere martial arts competition it once was.

Please accept apology for recent posting of tournament in Orlando
Florida. As it turned out, the event consisted of rules and other
factors that make it impossible to categorize as "sport jujitsu."
Will try to be more careful with such posts in future. Happily, in this
instance, turn-out was very small, so hopefully, no harm done. Again,
sorry.

Subject: Ken Penland [17]
To: kiai@...
Dear Martial Artist,
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Professor
Kenneth Penland late Sunday afternoon, October 8, 2006, after a long
bout with throat cancer. He was 59. [8/22/47-10/8/06].
Ken was a tremendous martial artist, serving the martial arts
community for many decades. I had the pleasure of knowing Ken since
the 1970's. I came to know him as a sincere and giving person. Early
in my martial arts career as a sensei and founder of the American
Ju-Jitsu Association I found that I could go to him for honest advice.
Our friendship flourished on that basis.Ken was tremendously
influential in resolving some of the early policy issues facing the
AJA. He offered his vast experience freely and provided perspectives
that others had not thought of.
That relationship continued in later years where either of us
could pick up the phone & discuss any issue that was on our minds. His
sincerity and dedication added immense value to whatever advice he
provided. Ken was also one of the "old-timers" and a consistent draw
at almost every Camp Budoshin held for the past 15-16 years. It wasn't
camp without Ken.
We all missed him this year, knowing that he was in declining
health, and that his time was near. We will miss his gravelly voice,
his smile, and that glint in his eyes. I will also remember a phrase
that he often said to me after we discussed an issue: "You've got to
do what you think is right."
Ken is the third close martial arts friend and advisor I've lost
this year; actually in the last three months. I shall truly miss him
as I miss the other two. However, I also know that he's on the great
tatami up in the sky with all the other martial arts greats.

The following is just one of many posts on a very popular web site concerning Sport Jujitsu and the corrupt, fraudulent karate group who suddenly became jujitsu black belts and now claims to be in charge of the sport that the legitimate jujitsu community created. The person who represents this group here in West Virginia (Roger Jarrett) never took or passed a 1st Degree Black Belt test in jujitsu yet somehow holds the rank of 7th dan in jujitsu.??? To top it all off this guy gets the green light here in West Virginia by the WV Athletic Commission (ie.Steven Alred) to conduct jujitsu tournaments at will. While the legitimate Jujitsu community (especially Me) are flat-out denied to conduct the very sport I brought here to this state. The International Sport Jujitsu Association {ISJA} has more than 24 countries now following its rule book and still leads the world in Sport Jujitsu. The United States Sport Jujitsu Association {USSJA} (The original founding Sport Jujitsu organization) has embarked on a mission to restore the quality, equality, and integrity of the original sport jujitsu format. We are determined to win back the right for the Thousands of competitors, men, women and children who once participated annually here in this state where it all began! It is time for the Just to be recognized and the Fraudulent to be exposed! I do not know the author of the following post but I commend him for the courage to speak honestly about this very corrupt but politically powerful group. Please read the following and with discernment you will know the truth! Thank You and stay tuned because it has begun!!!

Thank You Mr. Reinhardt;
It's interesting how Mr. Bethers paints people utterly despising his actions with "fear". USJJF - in business for 36 years?
Originally a group of Karate men from Ohio and the Northern Midwest, who convinced the JJIF to give them their imprimatur. At that time it was USA- Ju-Jitsu
In the past 20 years they...well, it's improved - sort of... from sham US teams who 'se' results were hideous orthopedic injuries, to a reputation for "running out of the venue to vomit", to the present situation where they simply get trashed shamefully.
The Europeans were quite willing to accept this, along with pitifully weak teams from Japan.
Approximately 10 years or so ago, Mr. Bethers was recruited to give a "Judo Face" to this group of Porter-promoted Karate men who were, essentially, hiding their group from the US community. Bethers background was from the Oklahoma YMCA (a bit controversial there) and actually had done Judo, though his High ranks came from Porter (after he went off the beam). He denounced Porter as he helmed USJJF, and was at the same time partially responsible for the creation of the two sham organizations - USMAF and MAIF -which even closely "ape" Porter's groups! AND by the way - with all that high rank brain trust and skill, in EVERY martial art (!) don't you think they could do even a LITTLE BETTER in international competition? Despite Serbian fellow's blind loyalty to a group he's already joined (Don't worry little Americans! I'll help you!- this from someone who has LEFT JIIF to form his own group) this is madness that approaches what overtook Mr. Porter. At least Porter's previous credentials were high.
The giant USJJF web site was also created. To this day, it is USJJF's major achievement; it makes it seem almost IMPOSSIBLE that there's nothing behind it, besides a few old men and their cronies. At that time, the ONLY Martial Art/Sport they left alone, was Judo. Now, because Judo IS smaller, and the IJF has said "we are sport" they are circling what they feel is soon to become a corpse. Much as the carrion feeders they emulate. I don't think anybody's AFRAID of that, just disgusted.
USJJF may be single handedly responsible for the folding of its OW umbrella group, the North American Jujitsu Union; the Canadian and Mexican groups ceased to exist. Now there's a Pan-American Union to mask this fact. Another subterfuge; what a surprise.
This spectacularly unsuccessful (a matter of record; there are films of it here and abroad) SPORTS organization, is simply trying to make funds and membership an easy way; non-competitive members. Supply them with a reasonable diploma that doesn't claim an UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE rank, and there you are.
Now they sing the song of wanting to do "non-competitive martial art" when their only true track record is a mixture of puffery, exclusion, servile attitudes towards their European validating group, and pathetic failures. Bethers makes it worse by puffing USJJF to a 36 year history - he make the failures and chicanery last longer. He is looking for one venue where he won't constantly have to do damage control.
The Jujitsu Community has reacted: AJA (George Kirby, Dr. McCurdy) won't deal with them, Jujitsu America (Willy Cahill, Wally Jay and their people) has recoiled in disgust, the USJA (under Bergwerf) wouldn't make formal ties, Ernie Boggs runs a rival group (reforming now after Mr. Boggs' personal reverses) USSJA, which has drawn 10 times the number of US competitors.
Now they're crawling to Judo. And this fellow's claiming we're worried and we're scared?
This IS something to be advertised - but not in the way Mr. Bethers wishes.
You and your students are cordially invited to attend and participate in the first New York Invitational Martial Arts Tournament, sanctioned by the United States Sport jujitsu Association (USSJA). This event will be hosted by the North East Martial Arts Academy and will feature competition in Open-Hand Kata, Self Defense and the original Sport Jujitsu Free-Style Fighting format.Team USA coaches will be scouting this event for potential 2006 United States Sport Jujitsu Team members. You won't want to miss this opportunity to compete in one of the most exciting tournament formats ever, plus a chance to become a member of Team USA that will be competing in Argentina later this year!
Thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you there!

" USSJA Sport Jujitsu Outdoor Basho Huge Success "
Ric Anderton recently hosted an old style martial arts basho (gathering) at his farm in Dublin, Virginia on Saturday May 20, 2006. His farm that is normally used for breeding Thoroughbred Horses was the venue of an outdoor tournament that hosted nearly 200 sport jujitsu competitors.
The event was the second sport jujitsu tournament this year sanctioned by the United States Sport Jujitsu Association (USSJA). The USSJA competition format consist of Open-Hand Kata, Self Defense, and Free-Style Fighting. Competitors were divided by age, rank and experience level ranging from six years old & under to 50 years old & over. The beautiful scenery, friendly atmosphere and over-all talent made for a great day of martial arts. This outdoor basho is sure to grow into a future martial arts event you won't want to miss. Just don't forget the sunscreen! For more information on this event and other USSJA Sport Jujitsu events check out: www.ernielightfootboggs.com or www.sportjujitsu.com

United States Sport Jujitsu Association 'May Mountain Madness' Tournament in Dublin, Virginia
May 20, 2006
March 19, 2006. Jackson went to his first USSJA tournament yesterday in Wytheville, Virginia. We are so proud of him and of all his fellow Mount Airy Martial Arts students. They all competed so well and with so much heart. Amy and I couldn't believe how emotional and dramatic it was. We were exhausted by the time we left, so I can't imagine how tired the kids were. Karate is something Jackson wanted to do on his own, Amy and I know nothing about it, so it was a learning experience for all of us. Believe it or not, I don't have any action shots or footage of Jackson because I couldn't hold the camera steady. I finally just set it down. Jackson took three kicks during the first round of his first match that were hard enough to knock him backwards. He sprung back each time, but when they broke between rounds you could see that he was tired and hurting. His face was white, he was crying and holding his stomach. His coach during the break, Ernie Boggs, the US Sport Jujitsu team coach, a four time hall of famer and past world champion, calmed him down and gave him advice for the second half. As an adult competitor from New York later put it, Jackson is "definitely a second rounder." He wiped off his tears and came back in a fury during the second round, scoring enough points to win the overall match. He continued to compete with so much heart, fighting in two more matches, back to back, and we were terribly proud of him. He was so tired and came up just shy of a trophy, placing fourth. I think he did fantastic for his first tournament ever. And it goes without saying that we were absolute wrecks watching him out there fighting.
The crowd from home cheered so loud for Jackson that we wanted to stay and return the favor by cheering for the rest of the team. Like I said, we were so surprised at the amount of drama and emotion that took place in competition after competition. Ben finally couldn't take anymore and we had to call it a day. At one point during Jackson's match Ben yelled "Stttttooooooopppppp!!!!!" to the cheering crowd. When the round ended and everyone was finally quiet, Ben looked up at the stands and said "I tell evewybody STOP." My sister, who made the trip along with my mom and dad, has photos onher website too. Comment (0)

Sensei Boggs, I'd like to get this in your local Charleston newspaper, but I don't know who to send it to, or how. I think something such as this needs to be brought to the attention of your local legislators.
On March 16, 2006 a caravan of several cars bearing WV license plates traveled the WV Turnpike and exited at Exit 73 in Wytheville, VA. Each vehicle carried a multiple of passengers, from babies to senior citizens.
These travelers, along with others from North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and as far away as New York, checked into various motels close to Exit 73. For two days, restaurants had folks standing in line to eat. Hotels were filled to capacity. These visitors were there to attend a local open martial arts tournament, with over 130 male and female competitors ranging in ages from 5 years to mid 50s, all of whom escaped without injury. The event was held at a local high school where the basketball gymnasium was filled with screaming fans.
What I find amazing is that while the state of Virginia benefited from the many visitors who rented motel rooms and ate at least 6 meals each, the state of WV received only the tolls for those cars traveling the WV turnpike, a measly $7.50 per car because this type of tournament is not permitted in West Virginia. Upon checking with tournament officials, I learned there would be additional tournaments, held monthly or bimonthly, in other states all over the United States.
When are your state and/or local politicians going to wake up and allow this type of competition in your state? Why is West Virginia the only state in the union that disallows this type of tournament? It is safe, it keeps kids off the streets, and it brings travelers and revenue to an impoverished state.
Gimme that ol' time Sport Jujitsu!! Don't forget the tournament
