Barbed wire traps above Evans Canyon   Message List

Re: [renowheelmen] MORE Barbed wire traps above Evans Canyon

Greetings all,

6/1-  1:00pm Found barbed wire along the trail at the top of the knob south of the houses at the end of Hoge road.  One strand was running the middle of the trail for about 20 feet.  Another was set up across the trail, at ankle height, being held in by a couple rocks to keep tension.  It was all removed.

Also, just to the southwest of the above location there is a steep technical section after a plank that crosses an old mine.  Numerous boulders had been placed in this steep technical section (both the gnarly drop and the easier route a few feet away).  Unfortunately I was late for an appointment and couldn't move all the boulders.

Now that I've thoroughly confused everyone with my goofy directions, I'll get to my point-  Someone is intentionally messing with the trails in an attempt to inflict harm.  Without getting into who or what may have angered the people putting these traps up- we all need to be careful out there and keep eachother apprised of any other traps we encounter.  Thankfully nobody has been hurt.

Later,
Pete

Also keep in mind that these traps could be targeting the motorcylcists that ride out there. The area that is being described sounds like it is in the non-motorized area and people get even more pissed about that than they do about Mt Bikes. Also someone mentioned contacting the BLM, the land on Peavine is managed by the US Forest Service, not the BLM. Be sure to give them a call (Carson Office, ask for Jon Knudson [Law Enforcement] or Dan Morris [Recreation and Trails]) and if you have pictures or any other evidence.

I'm not attacking! I'm pointing out a problem we have in the cycling community. If we don't self police someone will do it for us! This was an incident I witnessed first hand that happened just before and in exactly the same area as the booby traps. Might be related, might not. It's worth the discussion. If peoples feelings are hurt because they believe they are being singled out, too effin' bad. I'd like to not get tore up on a booby trap because of somebody else' bad trail etiquette.

Jesus guys, DH, CX, single-speeder, track, whatever.... put a dick on anything and the rest writes its self-

Don't attack your fellow cyclists, attack those putting wire across the trails - there's a way bigger issue there.

Thanks

Damn DOWNHILLERS, especially those from Northstar, what are we gonna do, they're all over the Peavine trails, they used to just wanna shuttle with their pads on the outside of their jerseys but now they're on these new 6.5 inch trail bikes having fun with with all the trail users, YES, including the singlespeed hardtail kooks! What, do I sound like I've got a bit of stereotype in my email O'Meara?

might have something to do with northstar downhillers passing hikers at 30 mph yesterday because they had to "practice for the race this weekend". We're our own worse enemies at times. these young men were completely oblivious and surprised I asked them to to be considerate of other trail useres on a multi-use trail.

I found two sections of trail that had barbed wire strung across it this morning.  One was at the top of the downhill course and the other was across the single track access from the jeep road onto BLM land. (looking down onto the radio towers, I don't know the name of the trail)  We took the wire down, but there could be more out there, so please be careful!
