D-I Women's Volleyball Tournament Set

The national championship will be held on Saturday, December 19 at the St. Pete Times Forum

Nov. 29, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS --- The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee announced today the 64-team field for the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. Thirty-one conferences were awarded automatic qualification, and the remaining 33 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket.

Bracket: http://www.ncaa.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/ncaa/sports/w-volley/auto_pdf/2009-WVB-D1Bracket

The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and placed within four regions. The teams tabbed as the top four seeds were No. 1 Pennsylvania State University; No. 2 University of Texas at Austin; No. 3 Florida State University; and No. 4 Stanford University.
The established bracketing principles of non-conference first- and second-round matchups were followed and team pairings were determined by geographical proximity.

The Pacific-10 Conference led all conferences with eight teams selected. The Big Ten Conference and the Big 12 Conference garnered six teams each in the field while the Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams in the tournament. Two teams, Penn State and Stanford have earned bids to all 29 championships. Five teams are making their initial appearances in the tournament: U.S. Military Academy, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Niagara University, University of Northern Colorado and Texas Christian University
.
In the 28-year history of the championship, 10 schools have been crowned champion, nine of which are in this year's bracket, including two-time defending champion Penn State.

EEVB is running a new league Tuesday nights in Commack from 12/1 to 2/2/10

Info for all EEVB leagues can be found online at www.eevb.net/leagues.htm

Teams will be accepted on a first come first served basis: registration is open at:     http://www.active.com/myevent/ed_events.cfm?CHECKSSO=0&USER_ID=3256574

We are trying something new for this league which will have 12 teams. The schedule will be made up weekly based on a team’s record like the summer leagues. Teams will be split up by chance the first 2 weeks. Starting the 3rd week the top 6 teams will play in 1 session and the bottom 6 teams will play in the other session. In order to give teams equal chance of playing in the early and late sessions, the top and bottom teams will switch each week between the early and late session giving teams a chance to predict which session they will be in. See the schedule link on the Commack League web site to see what this will look like. The advantage of this system is that teams will play other teams similar in skill level every week and give teams a chance to measure their improvement.

League Times: 6:30 - 8:30 pm or 8:30 - 10:30 pm.

Dates: Tuesday Nights: December 1 to February 2: 10 week season including playoffs

Directions: L.I.E. traveling east to exit 52 north (Commack Rd.) or if traveling west use Exit 53 north (Commack Rd), north on Commack Rd. for 8 lights to Hauppauge Rd., make a left at the traffic light. The Suffolk Y JCC is 1/4 mile on the right. ADDRESS for MapQuest or GPS: 74 Hauppauge Road ~ Commack, NY 11725 ~ 631-462-9800

Divisions: filled on 1st come basis. Coed 6s divisions - (min. 2 females on court at all times; teams may start/play with only 1 female but will forfeit 3 points/game)

Competitive Coed 6s - -for novice to intermediate level players, 2 females required. All teams should understand the concept of passing to the setter and then setting the spiker
Playoffs- Single Elimination, top 8 teams.

Rosters: up to 10 players per team (note - see prizes below).

Prizes: Awarded to top 2 teams in each division based on playoff results, maximum 8 prizes per team for coed 6s.

Entry fees: $440/team + AVPNext membership

Forfeits: Teams that forfeit without notifying EEVB and teams that forfeit twice will be subject to expulsion from the league.

AVPNext Memberships (Required for all players): $10/player if done online, $15 if done at the gym. Membership expires 12/31 of the current calendar year. All members must renew at the first league of the new year.

    • Click for AVPNext online registration: then include your new membership # on the roster.
    • ALL PLAYERS MUST HAVE AVPNEXT #s BEFORE THE FIRST NIGHT OF PLAY
    • AVPNext in the grass roots organization of the AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour. They promote beach volleyball throughout the US. All of our players help out by becoming members and contributing $10 per year membership to help with that cause.

Entry Procedure:

1.       Download roster and email it to eevb@...:

2.       Payment
Mail check to EEVB, PO Box 49, Hampton Bays, NY 11946  OR:
To pay by credit card go to: Active.com and click Commack Y JCC

League Procedures

1.     The first 2 full teams that arrive at the gym play the 1st match of the night. If 2 teams are not ready to play by 6:45 (or 8:45 in the late session), then the 2 teams listed first on the schedule will start playing even if they are shorthanded. The winner of the 2nd game of the first match stays on and plays the game 1 work team. Follow this order throughout the night. All matches will be 2 games played at one time.
All warm-ups must be finished before that time and matches must start at 6:45 or 8:45.

2.     Any team that starts play with 1 female will begin the game minus 3 pts per game; even if the missing female arrives during the game (she can still join in right away). The 3-points can be added anytime during a match if the score keeper forgets to add them at the beginning; even if that ends the game at the point they are added. The 3 point deficit is waived if the team plays with only 3 males and 1 female.

3.     Teams that are short players may pick up to 2 players from the team that is not playing as long as the captain of the competing team agrees. Teams that pick up any extra players will start the game minus 3 pts per game

4.     The most a team can start down is 4 pts.

5.     Rule clarifications:

a.     Let serves are legal. (Play any serve that hits the net)

b.    The backboard is in and any ball that hits it is in play regardless of the trajectory of the ball. The only ball not good is the one that hits the backboard and rebounds over the net without any players touching it. This rule will keep more balls in play.

c.     The ball may not be carried. Referees should call a tighter game than in the past, as this will only make players better.

d.    No point cap, teams must win by 2 pts.

e.     Games are all played to the same amount, no shortening of games if running late.

To Register: www.eevb.net/reg

EEVB has changed the Open registration policy for men and women. All open teams must pre-register and prepay through Active.com. Check in will be at 8 am and first matches will start at 8:30 am. We plan to use all available courts while other divisions are still registering. This will allow us to play as many games as possible in the first round and speed up the end of the tournament by at least 1 hour. All teams will either ref or play at 8:30. We will do this all season at double elimination tournaments.

EEVB is adding a new prize/competition to the Sept. 19 League Championship tournament at Cedar Beach:

$500 Best Costume Award

$500 will be awarded to the team that plays in the best costume.

2nd and 3rd place will receive  $100 bar tab from the Beach Hut good that night.

Contest applies to all teams in tournament: 2s, 4s & 6s teams

The judging will take place after the finals during the players party and will be based on EEVB staff opinions and on crowd reaction.

So get your heads together to come up with the best costumes. Then get all of your friends to come to make some noise for your costumes.

And plan on staying late at the players party where every player will receive 2 complimentary beers and food.
