Subject: Review - Bruce Lee's Fighting Method - Basic Training, Volume 2
xoyqyycuurya
Offline Offline

What is it about a man like Bruce Lee that has made him a martial arts legend?
While the fancy stunts of Jackie Chan and Jet Li provide us with heart stopping
entertainment, most of these feats employ the use of trick photography, strings
and trampolines. What is so intriguing about Bruce Lee is that the man was real
and so were his martial arts. Regardless of who comes and goes at the box
office, there will never be another Bruce Lee.
Bruce Lee's Fighting Method: Basic Training was released by Bruce's wife, Linda
Lee Caldwell, in 1977. During his lifetime, Bruce was hesitant to publish his
training material because he wanted to avoid people learning from his books and
then misleading the public into believing that were personally trained by him.
It is important when reading Basic Training not to get sidetracked by the
antiquated training equipment. These photographs were taken in the late 60's and
do not depict what we modern day martial artists are used to by today's
standards. What does require your attention is his training philosophy and the
means by which you may improve your overall body conditioning. While following
his training guidelines will not turn you into another Bruce Lee, you will
improve your skill and fitness level if you put in the effort.
One of the key ingredients to being able to handle yourself on the streets is
good physical conditioning. It is also important to master simple, effective
strikes that may be accessed during a time where adrenaline is flooding your
body and clouding your mind. It is in these moments that simple is best. All the
fancy, rehearsed combination's fly out the window. This book prepares you for
that reality.
Basic Training wastes no time in getting to the heart of Bruce Lee's training
philosophy. Chapter One launches into the importance of increasing your aerobic
endurance and then proceeds to show you how. This is followed by Chapter Two,
entitled The On-Guard Position. A detailed discussion of the importance of
maintaining a proper on-guard stance also includes an analysis of classical
fighting stances and how many of them hinder efficient defensive movement.
Correct body alignment and the importance of maintaining proper balance is also
addressed in this chapter. Basic Training then logically proceeds to developing
proper footwork in Chapter Three. Bruce Lee's evasion principles are introduced
as they show martial artists how to get out of the way of an attack.
The next two chapters look at power and speed and how to achieve both with the
use of training equipment. Bruce Lee's famous one-inch punch is discussed in
Chapter 4 and readers are taught that generating such awesome power requires the
coordination of everything from the right way to make a fist, to the proper way
to pivot your hip. Using the hands and legs to strike objects like air shields,
heavy bags, focus mitts and the makiwara is also demonstrated. Speed Training
talks about the importance of building lightening speed without giving your
technique away to your opponent. Bruce Lee learned about the importance of not
telegraphing by observing the art of fencing.
Calasanz has encouraged his students to read this book to enhance their martial
arts understanding. "This book inspired and helped me realize the depth of Bruce
Lee's skill", says Calasanz. "He wasn't a tournament fighter who fought for a
fancy plastic trophy. Bruce Lee was someone who could survive on the streets."
Without degrading or upgrading any particular style of martial arts, Bruce Lee
trained intelligently, dispensing techniques that were impractical for street
survival. Bruce Lee's methods are useful to any martial arts practitioner
regardless of their chosen style and our students are still adhering to his
training philosophy in the new millennium.
Basic Training does indeed get to the heart of its title. This classic is easy
to understand, logically sequenced and fundamentally sound. Bruce Lee's legacy
lives on because he was, real, in all respects.

Subject: What is Jujutsu? Part 3 of a 3 Part Series
xoyqyycuurya
Offline Offline

What most people do not know about Jujutsu today is that back in the day of
Samurai, there were NO Jujutsu Dojo or schools. There were only schools of
weapons. So first, you would learn the sword and then after mastering the
sword you would learn empty handed methods of killing or crippling your opponent
to then take their weapon away to replace what you have lost during battle.
Also there were schools in spear fighting (so Jutsu), schools in staff fighting
(bo Jutsu). Also - Jo Jutsu / Hanbo Jutsu / Yawara (hand stick) and there
was also knife fighting (Tanto Jutsu).
So here is the philosophy behind the thinking back then and behind the thinking
of the Freedman's Method as well. You can't do a good job defending against
something you don't understand. So if you did not know how a knife or sword was
used, then how will you ever be able to properly defend against it? You
must first learn to fight with a knife so that you can learn how it will be used
against you so you can properly defend yourself against that weapon of choice
being used against you.
Multiple opponents (Randori): In jujutsu, we learn how to deal with more
than just one person. Sometimes there can be five or six opponents. Body
positioning, angles and timing are crucial. Timing is a must! Every time we
teach anything in Freedman's Method, we always want to make sure to remind each
student to always remember that they are never just fighting one opponent, even
though it may first appear like they are fighting one opponent. We teach our
students to always cover your back and be aware of your surroundings.
Always treat one opponent as two opponents. Treat two opponents as
three opponents and so on.
Ground Fighting (Ne-Waza): In Freedman's Method of Ketsugo Jujustu, we
teach our students to try to their best to get right back up onto their feet as
soon as possible. The faster, the better. However on those days when you can't
get up and you are stuck there, no worries. We learn to deal with these
issues of ground defense. We do not like to tie ourselves with just one
opponent on the ground and wrestle around, trying to submit the person or make
him give up. By doing this my question would be, what about his three
buddies standing by while you wrestle around on the ground trying to submit him?
You either become a human kick ball or worse, a pin cushion! Our method of
ground work is finish him off quickly and roll up to your feet.
These are just a few things that Jujutsu has to offer and what we cover in
Freedman's Method of Jujutsu. I am speaking from a Japanese Jujutsu point
of view. Jujutsu mixes all these elements together and when you learn how this
works you can go & hang with the best of them. Remember all jujutsu students
are also students of anatomy. If you don't know anatomy, well then you are
not doing jujutsu properly.
To me the art of Jujutsu is the Art of War - The Art of Killing. Jujutsu
was designed to kill and cripple the opponent. It was not invented to be a sport
and that is why Jigoro Kano Sensei invented Judo (sport Jujutsu) so you can
practice full speed without injury. He kept the crippling and killing (Jujutsu)
separate & that was known as (Goshin Jutsu) but today even this is
lost.

Subject: Street Fighting Training - Developing Combat Reflexes
xoyqyycuurya
Offline Offline

A fundamental principal of self defense is using our intelligence to avoid
dangerous situations to begin with.
Unfortunately, we may occasionally be faced with situations in which we are
forced to take physical defensive action to keep ourselves safe.
This is where street fighting training comes into play.
When it comes to defending ourselves in an unavoidable violent confrontation, we
need to be aware of certain factors that can help turn the tables in our favor,
such as:
* awareness of the attackers weaknesses
* knowledge of how to exploit those weaknesses
* presence of mind and confidence to act
* hand/eye coordination
* reflexes
Reflexes play a crucial role in self defense and street fighting.
You may be a solid puncher, an expert wrestler, or a martial artist trained in
thousands of techniques --- but if your reflexes are not sharp, you are likely
get hurt in a fight.
Real-life violence often comes quickly and unexpectedly. Attackers often have
unorthodox and unpredictable approaches at fighting.
It is, therefore, in our best interests to hone our reflexes through practical
street fighting training.
There are countless drills that can help us to sharpen our reflexes. Here are 3
of my favorites:
1. KNIFE DEFENSE DRILLS: Have a partner strike at you with a training knife from
random angles, meeting the attacking arm with blocks (or another training
knife). Start off at a slow pace and work your way up to "real time".
2. FOCUS MITT DRILLS: Focus mitts are a great training tool and an excellent
investment. Have your partner/trainer "feed" you with a variety of targets (jab,
straight, hook, uppercut, front kick, roundhouse). Pay attention to gesturing
and telegraphing to anticipate what target will be thrown up next, and attack it
as quickly as possible.
3. STICK FIGHTING DRILLS: Stick fighting training (Kali, Arnis, Escrima) is a
fun and effective way to develop reflexes, hand/eye coordination, and awareness
of the various angles of attack.
When training to defend ourselves in a street fight, the ability to execute
techniques with speed and force is simply not enough.
We must train ourselves to recognize all angles and possibilities of attack, and
be ready to react in a fraction of a second.
Drill until your defensive tactics are immediate and natural reactions. Then
drill some more.
That is the essence of street fighting training.

Subject: Do Taekwondo Kicks Work on the Streets? Find Out Here!
xoyqyycuurya
Offline Offline

Years ago when I was younger I achieved a taekwondo blackbelt and learned an
arsenal of kicks. However much of what I learned is useless when it comes to a
one on one fight on the streets. If you are approached by an attacker I hope to
show you that taekwondo kicks are not all cracked up to be what they are.
Taekwondo Kicks Problem #1 - Most of the kicking techniques are designed for
tournament point based fighting. When you try doing a jumping spinning head kick
and miss in a tournament, the referee stops the combat until you get on your
feet. On the streets, if you miss a head kick and fall down you will be attacked
where you lay.
Taekwondo Kicks Problem #2 - Lots of the styles of taekwondo tournament fighting
is completely useless when it comes to battle on the streets. The stuff you are
taught including the sideways fighting stance makes you vulnerable and open to
many types of attacks when it comes to a fight on the street.
Taewkondo Kicks Problem #3 - Taekwondo is a sport-based martial art. It was
never designed to be used outside of the dojo. In a reality based self defense
perspective, all sport based martial arts , specifically taekwondo are virtually
useless. If your martial art doesn't include throws, joint locks, grappling and
chokes you are out of luck.
Taekwondo kicks may be fancy and flashy but in reality they won't help you in a
real life or death attack on the streets. I've seen one person attempt a flying
sidekick only to be stabbed in front of a nightclub I worked at. Is Taekwondo
worth it?

One of the most popular movies of 2008 is Kung Fu Panda. This movie, which
teaches that everyone can make a difference in their own way, is well-reviewed
and well-loved by nearly everyone. Therefore, don't be surprised if your child
wants a Kung Fu Panda themed birthday party. Thankfully, it is not that hard to
provide for them when you use some imagination and craft supplies.
Pick a Character
One thing everybody is going to have to do is pick their favorite character. You
may have a lot of pandas but that is okay. You can simply work with it. Once
everyone has picked their favorite character, give the kids paper plates with
eye holes cut out of them. Then, using party supplies and craft items, the kids
can create their character on the paper plates and then wear them, turning them
into the characters they love from the movie.
The Belts
Every Kung Fu master has a belt, so by using some simple paper or even a bit of
fabric, you can make belts for everyone. These aren't going to be your normal
belts though, they are all white (or some other color) and the kids can decorate
them how they see fit. Let them put their personality into their belts and you
will see some great works of art unfold.
Capture the Moment
Once you have created the masks and the belts, it is time for everyone to strike
their best Kung Fu pose for the camera. Get a picture of it, put the name of the
character they are (even a made up name) in the computer and print it off for
them. This will give them a great picture to remember the fun Kung Fu Panda
birthday party with.
Kung Fu Panda is poised to become the biggest movie of the year and something
everyone wants to see. So, you should be ready when your child asks for a Kung
Fu Panda themed birthday party. If you use a few supplies and these party ideas,
you can create a great Kung Fu Panda birthday party!

Subject: Street Fighter Moves - 4 Reasons Why You Should Train to Respond to Surprise U
xoyqyycuurya
Offline Offline

How do you train? Or better yet, I should ask you, where do you train?
If you train in a Traditional Martial Arts school, I can almost bet with
100% certainty that you spend little or no time training to respond to surprise
unrehearsed attacks. Now, I didn't say, mind you, that you don't
practice sparring, but sparring in particular as it is typically done in the
wide open spaces of a dojo, is not exactly the same as preparing yourself for a
combat situation such as in a crowded room with lots of people and
furniture or where an assailant jumps from out of the bushes and attacks
you.
You absolutely MUST train yourself in situations that require you to respond to
surprise and unrehearsed attacks. And there are very solid reasons why you
should find a way to make this at least a part of your fight training regime.
4 Reasons Why You Should Always Train To Respond To Surprise And Unrehearsed
Attacks
Reason #1 - Surprise Attacks Is The Way Real Attacks Happen - Maybe,
when you think about it, one of the things that makes a fight a "fight" is that
it starts and happens sometimes when you least suspect it. If everyone
were born ready to respond to every threat or danger or if we had some mechanism
that would allow us to peer into the future to know when an attack were going to
happen before it happens thus avoiding it would preclude our need to train and
prepare for it. In the real world, fights happen surprisingly and you had
better have this mindset to respond to it.
Reason #2 - When You Practice To Respond To Surprise And Unrehearsed
Attacks, You Develop Fighting Creativity And Spontaneity - You do yourself
the greatest favor and service by being able to creatively respond to danger.
Even creativity, like everything else is made better and enhanced with
practice.
Reason #3 - You Quickly Discover Your Strengths And
Weaknesses - By practicing responding to surprise and unrehearsed
attacks during training, you will quickly discover the strength and weaknesses
of your techniques and your level of ability and skill to execute them.
Reason #4 - You Stimulate Your Adrenaline Reaction And Get Used To
It - By for, one of the most important advantages of practicing with
surprise and unrehearsed attacks is the stimulation and your natural acclimation
to the adrenaline rush. When you feel this adrenaline rush during a real
fight, you won't panic and you will know how to use and transmute it to allow
you to fight aggressively and forcefully without fear.

Subject: The 8 Main Elements of a Typical Karate Class
xoyqyycuurya
Offline Offline

Are you looking to join your local karate club or have you already taken the
first step and signed up? If you haven't yet visited your local martial arts
school, you're probably wondering what a typical karate class looks like. This
article will break down the main elements of a good karate class.
Obviously not every club will follow this format and within each martial arts
school the weekly classes will also change but this is meant to be a guide of
what to expect in general.
Classes also vary in length ranging from short 30 minute classes for young kids
to 1 hour classes or longer for older kids, teenagers and adults. The following
example is based on a one-hour class and not all of these elements will be
covered in each lesson.
1. Formal etiquette The majority of karate schools adhere to some kind of formal
etiquette at the beginning and end of each class. This practice can be
attributed to traditional Asian culture where bowing and formal chanting are
often used to begin and end any type of structured activity. Depending on your
chosen karate school you could see the full routine of formal etiquette
including kneeling, multiple bows and the verbal recital of the school creed to
a more laidback approach of an informal hand clap followed by the words, "Let's
begin".
2. Warm-up and stretching Before any type of physical activity it is highly
recommended that you warm-up and stretch. It is often a good idea to end the
activity with more stretching (sometimes called a warm-down). Karate is a very
physical activity and so it should be obvious that a warm-up is an integral part
of each lesson.
3. Practice of basic techniques Right after the warm-up ends many karate classes
begin with basic practice. This includes drilling stances, punches, kicks,
blocks and strikes on the spot and up and down the floor with the focus being on
multiple repetitions of the main techniques required for each rank level.
4. Forms practice Forms are pre-defined sequences of techniques that a
practitioner must memorize. The forms are often a main requirement for each
test, and they help the practitioner to understand how different techniques fit
together and integrate into sets of techniques. There are many different forms
and each one has a set pattern with a central focus.
They are often likened to the martial arts equivalent of a dance routine but
most forms have accompanying application drills that show how each technique can
be used against an opponent in a self-defense situation.
5. Short break Depending on the length and intensity of each class,
practitioners are often given the chance of a short "water break."
6. Partner work drills These types of drills are usually one of the fun parts of
a karate class because the practitioners get to practice their techniques with
an opponent to see how they are used and to drill appropriate reactions to
different types of attacks. Partner work drills aren't always limited to two
people but can often include multiple opponents or group training drills. This
usually depends on the creativity of the instructor and the overall level of the
class.
7. Pads and targets An important part of karate training is to practice your
techniques against different types of targets. These targets include soft or
hard focus targets, body shields, hanging bags or the more popular free-standing
Wavemasters, plastic sheets and even wooden boards from time to time. Pads and
targets are usually a lot of fun for all involved and give you a real sense of
what it feels like to actually strike a target.
8. Conditioning drills This is really where your level of fitness can improve
dramatically. Conditioning drills include running, jumping, push-ups, sit-ups,
jumping jacks, star jumps, squats, relays, and any number of stamina-focused
activities. Depending on the level of the class and the age group these drills
are not always for the light-hearted but you did want to get a good workout,
didn't you?
So in a nutshell a typical karate class will include some or all of these
different elements.
Good luck and best wishes on your journey in karate.
