THE GAME; It will be noted the game itself consists of urgent rushes up and down the field of play. These may be with or without the ball, which always doesn't join in. During play each player will be seen to adopt a broad grin of delight and usually maintained throughout the chukka. Opponets will try to break this expresion by hooking the players mallet when he tries to hit the ball.
POLO PONIES: These are the stars of the game of Polo and are often see to kick, or stop the ball when the rider is unable to do so. Polo Ponies may be any shape or size, but must not be (a) a cow (b) a pig. They must have four good legs and two eyes.
THE PLAYERS: Players on each team will often be seen to have numbers on their backs. These numbers are usually wrong, the correct numbers can be deduced as follows;
# 1 This is the player the rest of the team shouts at.
# 2 Identified by his cries of "mine" and "leave it you idiot" etc to the #1 player.
#3 Is there because he has no faith in #2 ability to hit the ball.
#4 Has no faith in anyone.
THE BALL: A small white spherical animal which players try to coax through the opponets goal. Polo balls are carefully bred, reputed to be insensitive to pain, and are said to enjoy the game very much. Obstinate and very tempermental, they often take refuge under a stationary pony.
NEW PLAYERS: The new player will do well to remember that polo ponies have a thorough knowledge of the rules of Polo and therefore all the rider has to do is stay aboard, strike the ball with the mallet when the pony inidcates that he should do so.
