D-I Women's Volleyball Tournament Set

The national championship will be held on Saturday, December 19 at the St. Pete Times Forum

Nov. 29, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS --- The NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Committee announced today the 64-team field for the 2009 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. Thirty-one conferences were awarded automatic qualification, and the remaining 33 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket.

The top 16 teams were seeded nationally and placed within four regions. The teams tabbed as the top four seeds were No. 1 Pennsylvania State University; No. 2 University of Texas at Austin; No. 3 Florida State University; and No. 4 Stanford University.
The established bracketing principles of non-conference first- and second-round matchups were followed and team pairings were determined by geographical proximity.

The Pacific-10 Conference led all conferences with eight teams selected. The Big Ten Conference and the Big 12 Conference garnered six teams each in the field while the Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams in the tournament. Two teams, Penn State and Stanford have earned bids to all 29 championships. Five teams are making their initial appearances in the tournament: U.S. Military Academy, Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, Niagara University, University of Northern Colorado and Texas Christian University

In the 28-year history of the championship, 10 schools have been crowned champion, nine of which are in this year's bracket, including two-time defending champion Penn State.

Additional past winners making the field are Stanford (1992, 94, 96, 97, 2001, 04), University of Hawaii, Manoa (1982, 83, 87), Long Beach State University (1989, 93, 98), University of California, Los Angeles (1984, 90, 91), University of Nebraska, Lincoln (1995, 2000, and 06), University of Southern California (1981, 2002, 03), Penn State (1999, 2007), Texas (1988) and University of Washington (2005).

First- and second-round matches will be played at 16 campus sites. A list of the first-round match-ups follows.

Sunday, November 22nd, the search is on for the best of the best to try out for our MAV Elite 15, 16, 17 and 18 and under teams. Elite teams compete in state and attend two qualifiers. Athletes may try out for Elite teams or travel teams. Travel teams are competing in-state only with an option to attend the National Qualifier in Atlanta. Coaches are experienced, motivating, have played at the collegiate level, are currently coaching at the collegiate level, or have been coaching with high school teams who have consistently competed at the regional and state level for FHSAA. sooo.... DRESS THE PART!!!
Your team will start each game with one theme point per "costumed"
player (max 4 pts)
To earn free theme points players must wear at least one Thanksgiving
themed article or accessory
ie: hat, belt, headdress, apron, bonnet, feathers, moccasins etc.

Tampa Sand 4s league

The Bob Sierra YMCA in Northdale (Tampa) will be starting leagues on
their new sand courts.

Our first league will be competitive coed 4s- 2 guys/ 2 girls
$200/ per team for a 6 week season plus playoffs (includes t-shirt)
(For all non- Y members: registration fee includes $25 discount on
community membership. This is a $60 per year fee which provides access
to the volleyball courts and all leagues/ tournaments/ open play)

This was originally scheduled to begin in the spring but if there is
enough interest we would like to start sooner so if you are interested
please let me know so I can get your team on the list!

    Nov. 14th
    At least 2 girls per team!

    This tourney is Thanksgiving themed: Pilgrims vs Indians
    sooo.... DRESS THE PART!!!
    Your team will start each game with one theme point per "costumed" player (max 4 pts)
    To earn free theme points players must wear at least one Thanksgiving themed article or accessory
    ie: hat, belt, headdress, apron, bonnet, feathers, moccasins etc.
    HAVE FUN, BE CREATIVE!
    (players need only START each game "in costume" to receive theme points)

    Beach Volleyball Programs and Leagues for Juniors and Adults.

Altamonte Sports & Programs and the Orlando Volleyball Academy are happy to
present new sand volleyball programs for juniors ages 7 years and up at Merrill
Park, located right off of Jamestown Blvd. in Altamonte Springs, FL.

Players are invited to sign up for one of the training and development programs
(Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays) where they will learn the
fundamentals of sand volleyball; this includes proper stretching, body
positioning, communication, passing, serving, hitting, rules of the game and
scrimmage competition. The training and development programs run 4 weeks and are
held all throughout the year. The cost for the training and development program
is $60 (non-refundable).

Sand volleyball leagues for juniors are also available on Fridays; teams consist
of 2 players, run for 6 weeks and are held all throughout the year. The cost for
the juniors league per player is $35 (non-refundable).

Adult leagues are also available Monday through Friday, coed 4's and coed 2's,
run for 6 weeks and are held throughout the year. The cost for the adult league
per player is $35 (non-refundable).

All juniors and adult programs/leagues are ongoing, register anytime.

THE OSC IS HOSTING THEIR FIRST COED BLIND DRAW BEACH VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT TO
HELP FUNDRAISE FOR THE UCF MEN'S VOLLEYBALL CLUB.

Everyone registers individually and is randomly placed on a 4 person team. 
Teams will play each other and then split into divisions that will compete for
prizes including attraction tickets and restaurant certificates.

It's a great, new event that is an excellent opportunity to have fun playing
volleyball and meeting new people.  Entry fee is $20 per person.

    Manatee Area Volleyball club is holding tryouts for the elite travel teams for U18, U17, U16, U15 and U14 age groups on August 30th in Bradenton. If you are motivated to play college volleyball in the future, please contact Nancy Cothron at tcothron@... or (941) 748-1093 for more information. Practices will not begin until after the high school season ends, but optional workshops and clinics focusing on skill improvement and conditioning will be offered to any member of MAV, on Sundays through October and November. Currently MAV boasts two NJCAA college coaches, two former Division I players and one State Champ/Runner up coach as well as many other dedicated and qualified coaches. Come learn from the best.

    For those looking for a place to play beach volleyball as frequently as they can, Alan Hafez and the good folks at Club V have expanded their outdoor schedule to now include Monday nights. That’s right – now you can head on over to Clearwater and get spanked by the local boys/gals five nights a week.  

     

    In the past, the Club V beach facility was closed on Mondays to accommodate their indoor league but has recently started to open its doors for the Monday night crowd. Start your week off right by getting sand between your toes and a little bump, set, spike action.

     

    If you have never visited the Club V facilities, you have no clue what you are missing. Twenty (yes 20) sand courts on some of the nicest, purest, cleanest sand in the country. Club V has high quality, professional equipment and bright stadium lights that let you play way after the sun has gone down.

     

    So what are you waiting for?? Get off the computer and get your butt out to Club V for the most fun you can have in the sand with your clothes on.
