WHITE SOX AGREE TO TERMS ON ONE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH

10-TIME GOLD GLOVE WINNER ANDRUW JONES

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with outfielder Andruw Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove Award winner and five-time All-Star.  Under terms of the deal, Jones will receive a base salary of $500,000 in 2010 and up to an additional $1 million in performance bonuses.

Jones, 32, batted .214 (60-281) with 17 home runs and 43 RBI in 82 games with Texas in 2009 while making 53 starts as the designated hitter, 12 in left field, five in right field and four at first base.

The 6-foot-1, 240-pounder averaged one home run every 16.5 at-bats, which would have ranked eighth in the American League with the required plate appearances, and he led the team with an average of one walk every 7.36 plate appearances.  Jones hit three home runs on July 8 at the Los Angeles Angels.

“This is an opportunity to add a power bat to the roster while improving our outfield depth,” said Ken Williams, White Sox general manager.  “With the addition of Andruw, Mark Kotsay and Omar Vizquel, we feel our bench is taking shape to be a strong asset heading into the 2010 season.”

A native of Willemstad, Curacao, Jones owns a lifetime .257 (1,776-6,898) average with 388 home runs, 1,174 RBI and 1,109 runs scored in 1,918 games with Atlanta (1996-2007), the Los Angeles Dodgers (2008) and the Rangers (2009).  He has added 356 doubles and 143 stolen bases.

Jones has hit 30 or more home runs seven times, including a career-high 51 in 2005, and has recorded 100-plus RBI five times, most recently with a career-best 129 in 2006.  Among players active in 2009, Jones ranks 10th in home runs, 15th in RBI and 19th in runs scored.  His 388 home runs rank 52nd all-time.

Jones (1998-2007) is one of just five outfielders in major-league history to win to win at least 10 Gold Gloves,  joining Roberto Clemente (12), Willie Mays (12), Ken Griffey Jr. (10) and Al Kaline (10), and is one of 15 players all-time with 10 or more.  Teammate Omar Vizquel (11) is one of the 15.

He owns a .992 (38 E/4,563 TC) career fielding percentage in center field, the second-best mark since 1954 among players with at least 1,500 games at that position.  Only Brett Butler (.993) ranks ahead of Jones.

Jones is a five-time National League All-Star (2000, 2002-03, ’05-06) and has played in 75 career postseason games, including the 1996 and 1999 World Series with the Braves.

The White Sox 40-man roster is at 39.

You are right.  I read the book on the 1919 scandal
and the author makes a small case for the players
by laying some of the blame on the Sox owner Charles Comisky.

I still do not like Alex Rodriquez who at this pace looks like he could surpass Mr Steroid Bonds for the all time HR crown.
Alex used steroids and I believe he still used until a couple of years ago.

Agreed. The Sox already signed an "old" man with Vizquel and we don't need
another one. I'd rather see them go after Crisp since Dye will be gone and the
verdict on Pods is still out. They saved about 11 mil. by buying out Dyes
option so they can afford Crisp; and if Pods goes, we'll need an OF'er.

WHITE SOX AGREE TO TERMS ON ONE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH

11-TIME GOLD GLOVE WINNER OMAR VIZQUEL

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.375-million contract with 11-time Gold Glove infielder Omar Vizquel.

Vizquel, 42, batted .266 (47-177) with one home run and 14 RBI in 62 games with Texas in 2009, his 21st season in the major leagues.  The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder did not commit an error in 207 total chances while playing 27 games at shortstop, 20 at third base and 16 at second base.

A native of Caracas, Venezuela, the switch-hitting infielder owns a lifetime .273 (2,704-9,922) average with 78 home runs, 906 RBI and 1,378 runs scored in 2,742 games with Seattle (1989-1993), Cleveland (1994-2004), San Francisco (2005-08) and the Rangers (2009).  He has added 433 doubles, 74 triples and 389 stolen bases.

Vizquel has posted a .984 (183 E/11,877 TC) career fielding percentage, the highest ever among shortstops with at least 1,000 games played.  He has won 11 Rawlings Gold Gloves (1993-2001, 2005-06), second-most for a shortstop behind Ozzie Smith (13), and he is just one of seven players in history to win the award in both leagues.

Vizquel is the all-time leader among shortstops in games played (2,681) and double plays (1,722) and ranks third in assists (7,623).  He is the only shortstop in major-league history to play in at least 21 different seasons, and he has played in 238 games at short since turning age 40, the third-highest total ever behind Honus Wagner (356) and Luke Appling (354).

Among players active in 2009, Vizquel is the major-league leader in games played, at-bats and sacrifice bunts (244), ranks second in stolen bases and bunt hits (150), fourth in hits, sixth in triples and ninth in runs scored.

He ranks 25th all-time in games played, 26th in at-bats, 61st in hits and tied for 73rd in stolen bases.  His 2,704 hits are the fifth-highest total for a switch-hitter, trailing only Pete Rose (4,256), Eddie Murray (3,255), Frankie Frisch (2,880) and Roberto Alomar (2,724).

Vizquel is a three-time American League All-Star (1998-99, 2002), has played in 57 career postseason games, including the 1995 and 1997 World Series with the Indians, and captained the Venezuelan team in the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006.

If you guys check out the analysis on mlbtr then it is because teahan should be a far better fielder taking over for jd along with a consistent bat. I think it was good as he is established and a threat at the plate while although getz played similar, he is young and not proven consistent

I do agree that Josh needed some new scenery. He didn't seem like a fit for the Sox. I've read that they're going to move Beckham to 2nd. Posters in this forum have been bitching, pissing and moaning that we need some speed. Well, we just dumped some speed. Getz had 25 SB's last year, more than double of Fields and Teahen combined. Getz batted .010 less than "T" last year, and his OBP was only .002 less, and he had 17 more SB's. Can't really compare fielding % because Teahen played all over the place. Unfortunately, with his signing, that didn't leave room for Fields or Beckham at 3rd. 2009 stats: Teahen .271 BA; .325 OBP; 8 SB. Getz .261; .323; 25. Fields: .222; .301; 2. Yous decide if this was a good trade.

I do agree that Josh needed some new scenery. He didn't seem like a fit for the
Sox. I've read that they're going to move Beckham to 2nd. Posters in this
forum have been bitching, pissing and moaning that we need some speed. Well, we
just dumped some speed. Getz had 25 SB's last year, more than double of Fields
and Teahen combined. Getz batted .010 less than "T" last year, and his OBP was
only .002 less, and he had 17 more SB's. Can't really compare fielding %
because Teahen played all over the place. Unfortunately, with his signing, that
didn't leave room for Fields or Beckham at 3rd.  2009 stats: Teahen .271 BA;
.325 OBP; 8 SB. Getz .261; .323; 25. Fields: .222; .301; 2. Yous decide if
this was a good trade.

Royals trade Teahen to White Sox for Getz, Fields

CHICAGO (AP)—Mark Teahen(notes) has a new team and a new city. Happily for him, he’s got his old position back.

The Kansas City Royals sent Teahen to the White Sox on Friday and Chicago will find a home for him at third base.

“That’s really my comfort position,” Teahen said. “It’s huge. The past three years I haven’t known where I’m going to play and the past 24 hours I haven’t know what city I’m going to play in.”

The Royals got Chris Getz(notes) and Josh Fields(notes) from the White Sox in exchange.

Teahen was established at third base in Kansas City, but three years ago the Royals called up Alex Gordon(notes), who’d been the No. 2 overall draft pick two years earlier.

Thus began a trip around the diamond for Teahen and he never really settled in at any position.

Teahen batted .271 with a 12 home runs and 50 RBIs in 144 games with the Royals in 2009, battling a sore back in the final month of the season. He made 99 starts at third base, 31 in right field and three at second base.

Chicago general manager Ken Williams said Teahen would be the White Sox’s starting third baseman and last year’s rookie star, Gordon Beckham(notes), would be switched from third to second. Williams said Beckham, who was a star shortstop at the University of Georgia before being a first-round pick in 2008, was OK with the change.

Teahen said he can handle the outfield but prefers to play the position where he broke in with the Royals in 2005.

“It is tough when you are coming to the ball park every day just kind of checking the lineup card and seeing where you’re playing and figuring out where you are hitting in the lineup,” Teahen said.

“I’ve always produced better when I’ve just been left alone,” he said. “And playing third base I’ve been most productive there. My hope is settling back in there I can put up some bigger offensive numbers and not have to worry about as much stuff.”

Teahen is a career .269 hitter with 59 home runs and 293 RBIs in 676 career games, all with Kansas City. The White Sox also got cash considerations in the deal.

“He’s a delight to be around day in and day out. We’re going to miss him,” Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. “But at the end of the day we believe this was a good baseball trade for both organizations. We’re happy to be able to make the deal.”

Teahen could make as much as $5 million through arbitration. Was that a consideration?

“Obviously, we’re in a time in baseball where the economics are very, very important. I would not discount that as a part of the equation,” Moore said.

Kansas City also declined options for outfielder Coco Crisp(notes) ($8 million), catcher Miguel Olivo(notes) ($3.3 million) and right-hander Yasuhiko Yabuta(notes) ($4 million). Crisp and Olivo became eligible for free agency.

Crisp and Yabuta each get $500,000 buyouts and Olivo receives $100,000.

Getz became Chicago’s starting second basemen last season, batting .261 with two homers, 31 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in 107 games. He impressed manager Ozzie Guillen with his gritty play.

Fields, a former college quarterback at Oklahoma State, appeared in 29 games and batted .222 with seven homers and 30 RBIs last season. Fields show immense promise as a rookie in 2007 when he filled in for injured Joe Crede(notes) and hit 23 homers in 100 games.

But his career with the White Sox never took off after that. And after Beckham was called up, it was clear he had no future with the team.

The trade was announced shortly after the White Sox said they had declined a 2010 option on right fielder Jermaine Dye(notes).

Williams said he talked with Dye on Friday and there was no way at this time to fit him in. The White Sox gave the veteran a $950,000 buyout instead of $12 million in salary next season.

But Williams did not rule out the possibility of Dye returning, saying it would be a long offseason. He said the White Sox were still in the market for another outfielder and that it likely will not be Scott Podsednik(notes), who rejoined the White Sox last season and gave them a lift from the leadoff spot.

“Money is tight all over the world and certainly on the South Side,” Williams said. “We’re going to spend whatever we have available, but it’s not much.”

The left-handed hitting Teahen is a player the White Sox have watched for a while and even inquired about his availability last season, Williams said.

Teahen had a career-high 34 doubles last season and the White Sox figure that in homer-friendly U.S. Cellular Field some of those will clear the fence.

AP Sports Writer Doug Tucker in Kansas City contributed to this report.

Ideally this is a great move....Fields needed a change of venue..but Getz?...Is it me or does anyone feel that KC will finally break thru like Tampa Bay did with all this young talent?

He will find a job somewhere that is for sure.  The Mariners might get him and they might go after Matsui too.  I don't really care though where he and other players like him end up.  I say let the other teams sign the older players.  They only get injured more often and their productivity goes down despite their salary going up.  The Sox should be concentrating on younger stars with potential instead.  I think next season will be interesting and this team has a lot of things to improve on.  I think they can make a comeback!

** Who do you think will pick him up? My guess id either K.C. or Seattle as DH.

It might be a good fit but will we see it happen? I've heard from
people in NY (where I was for a few days last week) that the Yankees
might not bring him back due to his asking price..plus wouldn't his age
be a factor, too?

Also speak of the Yankees, had a good conversation about Swisher
too...apparently he was the same with the Yankees as he was with
us....sporadic hitter...but he did come through the other day in the
World Series...

Damon's running play on Sunday was about the most heads up baseball play
I've seen in years. But he is older.

If the Yankees don't bring Johnny Damon back, the White Sox look like a good fit. They need a leadoff hitter, and while they'd love to sign free agent Chone Figgins and move him to the outfield, he may get too pricy. While Damon has been a No. 2 hitter for the Yankees, he could easily go back to the top spot and give the White Sox some leadoff power.
