Britain's Aaron Cook claimed the biggest scalp of his life with a spectacular
knockout of American Steven Lopez, the five-time world champion and double
Olympic champion, to win the inaugural Taekwondo Pro Tour event in Mexico City.
Cook, who narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal when he finished fourth in
Beijing last summer, had never beaten Lopez before and was overcome with emotion
after sending the sport's most decorated fighter crashing to the floor with
brilliant headshot in the final round.
The win also earned the Manchester-based Cook, who is one of the 'Telegraph Ten
to Watch for 2012'. his biggest ever pay-day with a first prize of £18,000.
The 18-year-old made his breakthrough onto the senior circuit at the Dutch Open
Championships in 2007 where he took bronze after losing to Torann Mazeroi.
Replays went on to show that the result should have gone in Cook's favour after
two head shots went unawarded.
Since his debut competition, Cook has won a further three bronze medals, one
silver and two gold.

Sounds like a great event. I looked but could not find it in my TV
listings here in the eastern US. I wonder what networks carried it?
Also if there will be any chance to view it via internet in the future?
Thanks,

17-year-old Aaron Cook KO-ed 5-times world champ Steven Lopez! wow, that's news for us.

The inaugural World Taekwondo Tour will be held in Mexico City, Mexico on Nov.
14, 2009.
The World Taekwondo Tour 2009 Mexico, which will take place at the Palacio de
los Deportes, will draw 16 top athletes, mostly Olympic and World Championship
medal winners.
The WTF-promoted event is aimed at entertaining spectators and TV viewers by
displaying the spectacular techniques of takwondo. The WTF hopes the event can
be further developed into professional taekwondo competitions.
The WTF originally planned to hold the event in Mexico City on May 2, 2009, but
was put off due to the outbreak of the swine flu.
The one-day event, which has drawn great interest from international media,
especially TV, will feature four weight categories: the men's -58kg, the men's
-68kg, the men's -80kg, and the women's -57kg.
Four athletes will compete in each weight division for top prize of U.S.$20,000.
The silver medalist will take home $10,000 in prize money, while two
bronze-medal winners will earn $5,000.
Competitors in the men's -58kg weight division are Brazil's Marcio Ferreira, the
silver medalist at the 2005 World Taekwondo Championships; the Dominican
Republic's Gabriel Mercedes, the silver medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic
Games; Mexico's Damian Villa, the silver medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo
Championships; and Spain's Joel Gonzalez Bonilla, the gold medalist at the 2009
World taekwondo Championships.
In the men's -68kg weight category, Iran's Mohammad Bagheri, the gold medalist
at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships will compete for top honors with
Mexico's Idulio Islas, the silver medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo
Championships; Germany's Daniel Manz, the silver medalist at the 2008 CISM
Championships; and Canada's Maxim Potvin, the silver medalist at the 2009 World
Taekwondo Championships.
The United States' Steven Lopez, the gold medalist both at the 2000 and 2004
Olympic Games, and the five-time champion at the World Taekwondo Championships,
will vie for the top honors in the men's -80kg weight division with Great
Britain's Aaron Cook, the gold medalist at the 2008 World Junior Taekwondo
Championships and the fifth placer at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games; Iran's
Farzad Abdolahi, the quarterfinalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships;
and Korea's Jung-ho Park, the gold medalist at the 2004 Asia Taekwondo
Championships.
In the women's -57kg weight category, Korea's Su-jeong Lim, the gold medalist
both at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2009 World Taekwondo
Championships, will compete with the United States' Diana Lopez, the bronze
medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games; Spain's Andrea Rica Taboada, the
bronze medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships; and Guatemala's Euda
Carias Morales, the bronze medalist at the 2009 World Taekwondo Championships.
The WTF Competition Rules will apply to the inaugural World Taekwondo Tour 2009
Mexico, with some modifications. A single elimination tournament system will be
applied.
Electronic body protectors and an instant video replay system will not be
introduced to the event and there will be no protest process. The fourth
sudden-death round will be held with no time limit until the winner is decided
by golden point.
Rules on valid points may be modified to encourage the athletes to attempt more
spectacular techniques.
The 10-second rule will be strictly applied. Under the strict 10-second rule,
each contestant inactive for 10 seconds after the last execution of techniques
will be given a 10-second violation penalty and if a contestant receives four
10-second violation penalties, the concerned contestant will be disqualified
from the contest and declared as a loser.
The opening ceremony of the World Taekwondo Tour 2009 Mexico will begin at 4
p.m. on Nov. 14, with the semifinal and final matches scheduled for 5 p.m and 7
p.m., respectively.

he won the gold medal in the men's under 80kg category on the opening day of the

Lopez, the gold medal winner at both 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games and a bronze
medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, brushed aside a stiff challenge from
Spain's Nicolas Garcia Hemme in the final match to earn the honor. He won the
World Championships titles in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007.
"The victory means a lot to me. I won a bronze at the Beijing Olympic Games and
I haver trained very hard to this day. I made history in taekwondo and I am
proud of being part of the history," said Lopez shortly after the final match.
The bronze in the category went to Rashad Ahmadov of Azerbaijan and Michaud
Sebastien of Canada.

558 men, from 142 countries, the largest ever in WTF Championships history. The
2007 Beijing World Taekwondo Championships attracted 865 athletes from 116

Shortly after the announcement of the results of the presidential election, Dr.
Choue and Dr. Indrapana embraced each other and raised their hands in the air,
showing their unity and harmony.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Choue said, "Now it is time for us to put aside
our differences and rivalry. We are one family sharing the same vision for the
progress of taewkondo."
"Dr. Nat Indrapana made some important suggestions for the future of taekwondo.
With renewed spirit as one, we need to move forward for the further development
of our sport of taekwondo," Choue said.
He continued to say, "From this day, I will commit myself to carrying out my
campaign pledges step by step. I want you all to be part of the way." "With the
new leadership and new Council, I wish to make the next four years exciting and
memorable."
"Let us unite for the new chapter of taekwondo history and for the amazing
evolution of taekwondo," Choue concluded.
In his campaign speech before the election, Choue said, "Fair play has been the
guiding principle for my entire life. Fair play has been the main principle for
he election campaign because how we behave as leaders of the taekwondo family
reflects what we are."
"Although there have been some difficulties with untrue allegations, I have kept
my principles during this campaign, and I am standing humbly, but with dignity,
before you on this final stage," he said.
Choue said, "We gathered here, not to reveal how we are divided, but to
demonstrate how we are united. We gathered here, not to go backward, but to move
forward. We can not stop here. We have to keep moving forward."
"Four years ago, before you and the entire taekwondo family members around the
world, I solemnly pledged to bring some fundamental changes and innovations to
taekwondo."
He said, "We have to keep reforming, updating, and working together, because we
have responsibility to bring out taekwondo's true potential as an international
sport."

Dear friends, this is first time in last 6 years )since i joined this group-6
years ago)that i've felt a little off the road.
There is no activity within the last 7 days in the number one group. Is that a
valid point to predict that WTF_TAEKWONDO is no more gonna be at the No-1 spot ?
OR
Passions of over 2800 people (group members) have gone down ?
No updates, no discussion, losing interest ?
