Congrats to all our Storm Team Members who participated in this past weekend Gasparilla Events.

I don't think I really realized how challenging, but rewarding this Budlight Challenge was going to be...but I know now!

I'm not sure I knew what I was thinking when I signed up for this not realizing the Sarasota Half Marathon is in just two weeks....eeek!

For those of you who don't know, the Budlight Challenge is running the 15k and 5k on Saturday and the half marathon on Sunday.

Nicole C was suppose to join me..but she has an injury...so I braved it alone.. Gabby was a great help during the half ,she was a pacer for the Half marathon and I was able to hang with her until about mile 10.   I know this challenge is not as hard as the  Disney "Goofy Challenge"  (congrats to Andy for doing that), but for me it was enough. ..  It was  very exciting to see the following Tri Club members ...Andy, Suzette, Nancy D, Carl, Hannah, Karen H, John G, & Rachel..and Kevin said he saw Tom C, John L, Dave B, Kathy D,  and I know Theo ran the marathon.  Katie and Dawn (who are not tri club members yet, we are working on them), also did a great job in the marathon.

If there were any other Tri club members there..congrats to everyone..What an exciting and exhausting weekend. I highly recommend this Budlight Challange to anyone for next year....it really made me dig deep!

Peace Out,

Ren

U.S. registers sharp drop in shark attacks last year

March 4, 2010 | 12:06 pm

Shark3

Surfers and other ocean-sport enthusiasts might find solace in the news that shark attacks in the United States declined in 2009, according to a University of Florida report released Monday.

"The big story is that the number of attacks in the United States dropped dramatically from 41 in 2008 to 28 in 2009," said George Burgess, director of the International Shark Attack File at the university. "Considering there were 50 attacks in 2007, we may have a bit of a trend, but only time will tell."

One possibility for the decline of attacks in U.S. coastal waters may be that fewer people visited the shore due to the recession.

"Florida's population hasn't gone down, so I suppose the economy could have had an effect on how many times people can afford to put gas in their cars and go to the beach," added Burgess.

Worldwide is a different story, however, with attacks edging up ever so slightly, from 60 in 2008 to 61 in 2009.

"More than half the attacks -- 33 out of 61 -- were surfers and this continues a trend that we've been seeing for quite awhile," said Burgess.

Swimmers comprised the second largest group of victims, at 10. The remaining attacks involved just about every other ocean sport, including scuba diving, body and kite surfing, paddle and boogie boarding, snorkeling and spearfishing, plus some who were just wading or floating in the ocean when attacked.

At 28, the U.S. still led the world in the number of shark attacks -- Australia was second with 20, then South Africa with six.

Of those attacks in the U.S., 19 were in Florida, four in California, three in Hawaii and one each in Georgia and Texas.

The Florida Museum of Natural History website includes information on how to reduce the chances of being attacked by a shark, including using extra caution when waters are murky, avoid being in the water during darkness or twilight hours and always stay in groups since sharks are more likely to attack a solitary individual.

1:20 to 4 hours for the run.

i am serving gator sirloin, and pizza, for after the race

Hey Team,

I will be leaving for Miami early Saturday morning and will be staying at The Fortune Cookie.  Thank you Hannah, for negotiating with the hotel for the team!   My mobile number is 941-544-5044.  Feel free to call me even during the race, I'll probably answer.

Rob, please count me in on FIT Flyer duty.  Will we need firearms for this...it is Miami?

Storm Warning:
It is the calm before the storm! Yup Jonathan, I have packed my Oozy.
On a serious note, yes, Rob we need lots of fliers. Judi will be giving them out during the race and we plan to plant many at the Expo the day before.
Godspeed to everyone and we'll see you in Miami :)
Let the thunder roar,
Carl:)

Let the Storm begin,

Jonathan Moore

FYI
CK:)

Google Mapping Comes to Cycling

Google has launched maps for cyclists in the U.S. The unveiling was yesterday at the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC.

This new version works like Google's mapping for drivers, walkers and users of public transportation. It includes turn-by-turn riding directions, route outlines on a map, and a new "Bicycling" layer that indicates bike trails, bike lanes and bike-friendly roads.

Says the announcement: "Simply enter a start point and destination, and select Bicycling from the drop-down menu. You will receive a route that is optimized for cycling . . . and it avoids hilly terrain whenever possible."

We tested it by asking for a route between RBR headquarters and our favorite bike shop, South Mountain Cycles & Coffee Bar. Google instantly produced a map and directions.

Unfortunately (and needlessly), during the 14.2-mile (22.9-km) trip, Google put us on major highways for a third of the distance.

The good news is that it's easy to click and drag within the map to change the route. It takes just a few seconds to detour onto roads that really are better for cycling, and the turn-by-turn text directions update instantly.

Of course, in our example, if we didn't know these roads and simply obeyed Google, we'd have been riding in fast traffic. This is the beta version and user feedback is encouraged.

Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, notes there are 57 million American bike riders and this new Google mapping tool has the potential for creating more.

"It will open people's eyes to the possibility and practicality of hopping on a bike and riding," says Clarke. "It is a game-changer, especially for those short trips that are the most polluting."

Check it out at http://maps. google.com/ biking. Read Dr. Z's overview at about.com and additional analysis from the New York Times. Watch a demo on YouTube.

Carl is/has picking up the FIT Banner and that can only mean that Carl & I will have our tent set up on race day.  We would like all STORM MIT to stop by.  Hopefully we will have something put together to drink and eat.  We will also have flyers to hand out.  LOL
